Ports of Jersey acquires tug from UK operator

Ports of Jersey has taken delivery of a new tug built for work in local waters.

Devout, which arrived earlier this month, is a small, multi-purpose tug designed for the kind of work required around Jersey’s harbours.

The tug's former owner is Thamescraft Dry Docking Services in the UK.

Devout was built in 2009 and has twin Caterpillar engines that can deliver a bollard pull of 16 tonnes. Ports of Jersey said the tug's onboard deck crane will be reinstalled.

Ports of Jersey Marine Operations Manager Fleur Moisan said that, over the next few months, Devout will undergo refurbishing and maintenance as it transitions into its new role. Crews will meanwhile undergo familiarisation training.

Devout will be based in Jersey. In addition to its primary role of supporting vessels accessing St Helier harbour in inclement weather, it will be used by Ports of Jersey's maintenance team on tasks such as deploying seasonal buoyage and repairs of ladders and quays.

With the acquisition of the tug, the port's larger marine services vessels will be freed up to be able to work commercially on projects around the world, though these will still regularly return to Jersey waters to support significant projects and maintenance work.
