Damen to build three new ASD tugs

Valentine Watkins

Towage and salvage company Multraship has ordered three new Azimuth Stern Drive (ASD) tugs from Damen Shipyards Group for delivery in 2015.

Two of the tugs will be delivered in Vietnam and serve as sister vessels to the 83 tonne bollard pull 'Multratug 19', which was built by Damen in Romania in 2012. The third tug will be delivered in Romania. The ASD Tug 2810 Hybrid will have a diesel-direct, diesel-electric and battery-powered propulsion system aimed at saving fuel and reducing emissions.

Leendert Muller, managing director of Multraship, said the company was expanding its client base in the offshore energy sector as well as in its harbour towage operations. "All three ASD tugs are highly suitable for these markets whilst their FIFI 1 fire-fighting equipment makes them especially valuable for emergency response," he said.
