Vietnam to support its shipbuilding industry

The Prime Minister of Vietnam has pledged to provide support to Vietnam's shipbuilding industry, saying that it is a key sector in the country's modernisation and industrialisation programme.

Speaking at a Vinashin meeting recently, Nguyen Tan Dung said that the state builder faced difficulties due to the global economic downturn but that Vietnam would do its best to help it. He advised Vinashin to focus on its core operations and not to disperse its resources in different sectors.

Mr Dung urged Vinashin to review its short term and long term plans and to review its high debt and lack of financial transparency. The Ministry has also asked Vinashin to review its projects so as to identify those which could be delayed.
