Three-tank LNG carrier design secures Lloyd's Register approval in principle

Baird Maritime

Lloyd's Register (LR) has granted an approval in principle (AIP) for GTT's new 200,000-cubic-metre LNG carrier concept, which features slow-steaming navigation and three cargo tanks instead of the traditional four.

LR said this innovative concept challenges traditional LNG carrier design norms in addition to highlighting the importance of speed in reducing vessel emissions.

The 200,000cbm LNG carrier design offers significant environmental and economic advantages, including an approximately 27 per cent reduction in voyage-based emissions intensity and a decrease in unit freight cost (UFC) by up to 5.5 per cent by 2025 and 14 per cent by 2050 under frameworks like EU ETS and FuelEU.

LR conducted a thorough evaluation of the cargo tank design against class standards and IGC Code requirements, ensuring the integrity of the three-tank structure under increased sloshing loads. The assessment extended to various GTT containment systems, thus confirming that the design meets stringent safety and performance criteria.
