First steel cut for new LNG carrier for Nakilat

South Korean shipbuilder HD Hyundai Heavy Industries has cut the first steel to be used in the construction of a new LNG carrier ordered by Qatar Gas Transport Company (Nakilat).

The vessel belongs to a series of 17 LNG carriers that will each have a total cargo capacity of 174,000 cubic metres. They will be operated under charter by QatarEnergy, though ownership will remain with Nakilat.

In February 2024, Nakilat signed agreements with QatarEnergy to charter and operate 25 conventional-size LNG carriers, making Nakilat both the owner and operator of the vessels.

"The new LNG carriers will feature cutting-edge designs and innovative technologies, underscoring Nakilat’s commitment to the highest safety standards, operational excellence, and environmental sustainability," the company said.

"This milestone is a pivotal step in strengthening Nakilat’s capabilities as it continues to play a key role in meeting the global demand for LNG transportation."

Eight other 174,000cbm LNG carriers ordered by Nakilat are under construction at South Korea's Hanwha Ocean.
