Shipping Australia welcomes the Gillard Government

Baird Maritime

Shipping Shipping Australia members has welcomed the election of the Labor minority government. SAL's Mr Russell said there is a need to push ahead with the built up reform agenda, in particular progressing the port development and national freight network strategies.

"In addition, urgent attention being paid to the more effective use of existing freight infrastructure and development of new infrastructure in support of our exporting efforts is essential if we really are to move forward," he said.

SAL has already supported the broad outline of measures to revitalise the Australian merchant marine announced during the election campaign on the basis it leads to a viable and internationally competitive industry.

SAL is looking forward to being consulted as the detailed implementation plan is developed to ensure it can achieve an outcome that will facilitate Australia's trading efforts.

"At an early stage, we will again be approaching the Federal Government urging them to clarify the existing regulations that applies the Fair Work Act to foreign flag vessels carrying coastal cargo under permit (if more than one single voyage permit was issued in the previous twelve months)".

"Vessels who are carrying such cargo incidental to the carriage of Australia's foreign trade should be exempt as they clearly do not regularly engage in Australia's coastal trade," Mr Russell said.

Strong leadership is required in what are going to be very trying times ahead and to avoid inaction and a risk averse approach. We are confident that Prime Minister Gillard will deliver on the promises made during the election campaign and provide the strong leadership required.
