China: Shanghai is tipped to become China's largest shipbuilding hub by 2015 due to an increase in the city's annual production capacity to 12 million DWT.
According to the China Investment Consulting research group, the value of vessels completed at shipyards in Shanghai is expected to exceed US$8 billion by 2015, roughly one tenth of the US$80 billion worth of vessels built by other shipyards around other parts of China.
The China State Shipbuilding Company (CSSC) has recently announced plans for the future developments of its shipyards, including the construction of seven new shipyard.
Furthermore, Shanghai Shipyard, which is affiliated with CSSC, has said that it will construct four yards in Chongming to have an annual capacity of 1.5 million DWT.
Meanwhile, also in Chongming, CSSC's ship repair company, Huarun Dadong Dockyard, has expanded its facilities on Chongming Island.
