Shanghai Port begins offering regular methanol bunkering

Baird Maritime

Methanol bunkering for ships is now available as a regular service at the Port of Shanghai in China, the Shanghai International Port Group (SIPG) has confirmed.

The inaugural bunkering operation at the port was held on New Year's Day when the A.P. Moller Maersk 16,000TEU ultra large containership (ULCS) Ane Mærsk received methanol fuel from the bunkering vessel Haigang Zhiyuan. The latter was originally built as a chemical tanker but has been converted into a bunkering vessel.

The first ship-to-ship (STS) methanol bunkering operation at the Port of Shanghai was conducted in April 2024. However, the STS transfer earlier this month marks the start of routine methanol bunkering at the port.

SIPG expects that, by 2030, around one million tonnes of green methanol will be supplied each year to ships visiting the Port of Shanghai.

Another two bunkering operations at the port are scheduled for later this month now that methanol bunkering will be offered regularly.
