Oman's Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology (MTCIT) will not extend Salalah Port Services Company's concession agreements for the Port of Salalah beyond their contractual expiry on November 1, 2028.

The company, in which APM Terminals holds a 30 per cent stake, said on October 18 that it had received formal notification from the ministry. According to the company, the notification describes the decision as "final and unconditional".

The ministry said port operations and development work would carry on for the rest of the concession period. It added that, "the new operator that will take over the port's operations following the expiry of the aforementioned agreement will be announced in due course."

The company said its board would assess the notification's implications and potential impact.

The Omani Government holds a 20 per cent stake in the operator through Asyad Group.

The container and general cargo terminal concessions date from 1998, and APM Terminals provides technical and operational support under separate management agreements.

The decision follows a $300 million container terminal upgrade, completed in the first quarter of 2025, which lifted annual capacity to 6.5 million TEU, up from 4.5 million.

In March, executives said about $200 million of equipment linked to the programme had been leased instead of bought amid uncertainty over the concession, Oman Observer reported.

The port handled 4.3 million TEU in 2025, up 31 per cent on 2024.
