Construction of the Dongjiakou Port of Qingdao in China has been underway for one year this month, and by the end of the year two docks will be completed and put into basic use.
The Luneng General Dock and an iron ore dock handling ships of 400,000 tonnes will be the first elements in the 2010-15 first phase of the enormous 20-year project extending into 2030. The entire project is expected to cost nearly RMB100 billion (US$14.76 billion).
The new Dongjiakou Port is one of nine core economic zones of sea-related business in Shandong Province
In March 2009, the Ministry of Transportation and the Shandong Province government approved the general plan for Dongjiakou Port. Under the plan the entire port area will cover around 70 square-kilometres, including 55-square kilometres in the industrial zone. Coastal docks will be almost 36 kilometres in length.
The port will have three docks for 400,000-tonne ore and mineral ships and two docks for 450,000-tonne oil tankers and petroleum products ships. It will offer berths for 112 ships.
It is expected to have an annual capacity of 370 million tonnes.
