Port of Gothenburg acquires land for westward expansion

The Port of Gothenburg has reached an agreement to acquire land area in its outer regions from the developer Platzer to facilitate long-term expansion.

Signed on March 31, the deal involves a total transaction value of SEK684 million ($63.3 million), which includes a minor property sale.

This acquisition aims to secure the necessary space for future growth adjacent to existing port operations and logistics infrastructure. Chief Executive Officer Göran Eriksson stated, “This acquisition is carried out to create conditions for the port’s continued long-term development.”

The transaction incorporates land, office properties, and water areas that provide future opportunities for 210,000 square metres of new terminal space. A logistics property at the entrance to the port is also being sold as part of the arrangement.

Steady volume growth has prompted the need for continuous development to support the competitiveness of Swedish industry, according to the port. Eriksson noted that the facility needs to expand further and described the acquisition as a “natural step”.

Westward expansion at the site has been a consistent strategy since the 1970s, following the construction of the Älvsborg Ro-Ro terminal and the Arendal 2 terminal project.

This newly acquired property is located directly next to the planned Stena Line ferry terminal, which the port stated is scheduled for completion in 2031.

Revenue generated from existing office buildings on the site will serve as the financial foundation for the continued development of the area. Both the acquisition and the divestment of properties remain subject to final approval from the municipal council.

Transfer of ownership is expected by the company to take place no earlier than the fourth quarter of 2026.

Once the transaction is finalised, the port stated it will provide more detailed plans regarding the development of the location.
