New pontoon to help improve passenger safety at India's Mumbai Port

Baird Maritime

India's Mumbai Port Authority (MPA) and the Royal Bombay Yacht Club (RBYC) have installed a new pontoon at the number five jetty of Mumbai Port as a means of helping ensure the safety of embarking and disembarking passengers.

The pontoon helps create additional berthing space for passenger speedboats by allowing up to eight boats to berth at the number five jetty simultaneously.

An MPA official said the pontoon will permit loading and unloading of passengers to be done more efficiently, more safely, and in less time.

The RBYC is also developing new passenger checking software for use at Mumbai Port. The software will ensure that only those passengers with confirmed bookings for trips via the port will be allowed to access the jetties.

The installation of the pontoon is one of the many safety measures that have been put in place at Mumbai Port following a collision between two vessels that left 15 people dead in nearby waters last December.
