Mitsubishi reorganises its Nagasaki Shipyard, focuses on LNG

Valentine Watkins

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) has announced it will establish two new companies at its Nagasaki Shipyard and Machinery Works Koyagi Plant to undertake ship construction and manufacture hull blocks.

As part of the reorganisation, MHI will move its construction of large-size commercial ships from Nagasaki to the new companies. Cruise ship construction will be separated from its commercial ship business and operated under MHI's Commercial Aviation and Transportation Systems division.

The new ship construction entity will takeover MHI Ship and Ocean Engineering and will undertake sales, engineering, procurement, manufacture, construction and repair services. New ship construction will focus on LNG and LPG carriers to meet what MHI sees as an increase in demand.

The hull block manufacturing company will specialise in large-scale hull blocks and will look to customers outside MHI.
