Lithuania's Klaipeda Port to be upgraded to support offshore wind sector

Baird Maritime

The Klaipeda State Seaport Authority of Lithuania has begun reconstruction of some of the existing quays at the Port of Klaipeda to enable these to aid in the assembly, handling, and transportation of offshore wind turbines.

Local construction company Tilsta has been selected for the reconstruction project, which will be undertaken on quays at Klaipeda's former International Ferry Port.

As the reconstructed quays will be used for assembly, handling, storage and transportation of wind turbines, the work site will be designed for high loads, typically 40 tonne per square metre. In total, around 453 metres of quay will be reconstructed on Smeltė peninsula.

The contractor has also been tasked with carrying out dredging works at the quays to a depth of 12 metres from its current level of 10 metres. Further away from the quays, the depth of 12 metres has already been reached.

The project has a total cost of approximately €36.6 million (US$38 million) and is scheduled to be completed before the end of this year.
