The Chinese Government has inspected and approved Phase 2 of the channel expansion project at the Port of Guangzhou.
Prior to the commencement of dredging in March 2004, the port was only capable of receiving 50,000-tonne vessels at high tide. The port's channel has now been dredged to a depth of 15 metres, which allows 100,000-tonne ships through to the Nansha terminal at high tide.
According to a port official, Phase 3 of the project will be launched in July, which, upon completion, would allow a 100,000-tonne ship to access the port even at low tide.
