DCT Gdansk tests new STS cranes

Baird Maritime

DCT Gdansk, Poland's largest container terminal, has tested five new post-Panamax STS cranes from Liebherr, delivered in August as part of its expansion program.

DCT tested the five cranes for ten hours on an E-class vessel during discharge on November 9, and achieved a productivity level 60 percent  higher than with three cranes on its first attempt. DCT will continue to test the new cranes and upgrade existing cranes with enhancements to increase its productivity during the coming weeks.

In recent months DCT has been significantly expanding its Polish import/export volume market share, with monthly peaks exceeding 40 percent, but transhipment volumes remained limited due to DCT's crane limitations. With the ability to deploy five STS cranes on deep-sea vessels, DCT hopes to significantly reduce the turn-around time of larger vessels allowing the discharge of more significant transhipment volumes.
