Land reclamation works have been completed as part of a broader project to develop a new automated terminal at the Port of Shanghai in China.

Following the reclamation, which utilised approximately 100 million cubic metres of material, the project will now proceed to the wharf construction phase at west one area of the port's Xiaoyangshan North Operation Area.

Completion of wharf construction in this area is expected to expand the port's land coverage by 6,100 metres.

About 5,500 metres of the additional coverage will be allocated for a new container terminal along with seven berths for 70,000DWT vessels and 15 berths for 20,000DWT vessels. The new facility will have a projected annual throughput of 11.6 million TEUs.

The Shanghai International Port Group (SIPG) has invested CNY10 billion (US$1.4 billion) in the project.

The west one area is one of four parts that comprise the port's Xiaoyangshan North Operation Area. SIPG expects all works in this area to be completed by 2026, while reclamation in the adjacent west two area will be around 50 per cent complete within this year.
