Construction has begun on a new cruise ship terminal in Klaipėda, Lithuania, with contractor Tilsta now starting quay construction works, the port authority announced on June 30.
The first shipment of metal piles for the terminal’s quays, weighing a total of 1.9 thousand tonnes, recently arrived from Antwerp, Belgium, on the vessel Benabell G. This represents about 40 per cent of the piles needed for the quay construction. Prior to this, dredging was carried out at the site.
The project involves reconstructing existing quays and constructing new ones. The contract was signed with Tilsta in 2024, and the company has committed to completing the works within three years. When finished, the terminal will feature an amphitheatre, pedestrian and bicycle paths, leisure areas and event spaces.
Algis Latakas, CEO of the Klaipėda State Seaport Authority, stated that the new terminal will serve as, "a new gateway between the city and the sea". The new cruise ship terminal is being built on land owned by the Klaipėda Port Authority.
