Brazilian Minister of Development, Industry and Trade, Miguel Jorge, confirmed on July 9 that Brazil would provide US$110 million towards the modernisation of Cuba's Mariel Port.
Brazil has said that it will provide a total of US$300 million.
"The US$110 million was approved for highway repairs but Cuban authorities asked us to transfer the funds to the port, which is a more strategic project," Mr Jorge was quoted as saying in Business News Americas.
"The remaining US$190 million are approved but will be transferred as the project progresses."
The US$190 million will be spent on dredging, the construction of dikes, storage spaces and other infrastructure.
Mariel Port is located 45km west of Havana. The modernisation project will mean that Mariel will replace Havana as Cuba's principal port. The Port of Havana's shallower draught means that the port has less potential.
