Australia: Dredging at Port of Yamba completed

Baird Maritime

New South Wales (NSW) Maritime, Australia, has completed dredging of the main shipping channel of Clarence River to improve safety of large vessels using the port.

NSW Maritime Regional Ports and Shipping Safety Manager David Hunter said the dredging work was completed last week and the dredger, named 'Port Frederick', has left the port.

He said that the area dredged was between the river's entrance and Goodwood Island.

"The works took two weeks to complete and were on time and within budget," commented Mr Hunger.

"NSW Maritime will now undertake a hydrographic survey to chart the new depths and confirm all areas have been dredged to the required specification. This survey will take place in the next few weeks, weather permitting."

Mr Hunter said the dredger would return in late November if the survey revealed  that sections of the channel required further dredging to meet specified depths.

The dredging works were designed to provide a minimum of 4.2 metres from the  entrance of the port to the commercial wharf at Goodwood Island.
