Northern Territory Transport Minister Mr McCarthy said the record shipment beat the previous record set in July by more than 7,000 tonnes.

"East Arm Wharf is a major strategic asset for the Territory and plays a vital role in our economic development and ability to attract new industries," Mr McCarthy said.

"More than AU$3.0 billion (US$2.97 billion) worth of cargo weighing more than 4.5 million tonnes is moved through East Arm Wharf annually, which supports 500 industries and thousands of jobs."

Darwin Port Corporation Chief Executive Robert Ritchie said export of iron ore was from Territory Resources' open-cut mine at Frances Creek, 200 kilometres south of Darwin near Pine Creek and 15 kilometres from the Adelaide to Darwin rail line.
