Obviously the middle of a trilogy on the same general subject this well produced little picture book reflects the steady decline in the numbers of vessels calling at Tasmania's major northern port.

It also reflects a time of rapidly changing ship technology. Container and Ro-Ro ships were starting to mix it with motor sailing cargo ketches. A very interesting period.

The 1970s were a time of steady decline in the population and economy of Tasmania. The Australian island state was heading towards mendicancy.

This is shown very clearly in the ship traffic through Port Dalrymple. This reviewer is firmly of the opinion that port traffic is one of the best indicators of a region's economic condition.

Nevertheless, the book is a fine and very useful record. It has considerable historical value.
