Shipping in Greece is the only sector of production and services that has not contributed to domestic unemployment despite the nation being in the middle of a debt crisis, according to the Union of Greek Shipowners (UGS).
In fact, Greek shipping is facing a scarcity of officers and has recently embarked on a campaign to attract younger people to the profession, upgrading maritime education and modernising infrastructure.
The UGS called for the eradication of piracy and greater government support for the industry across the European Union in order to attract talent and better weather economic difficulties.
The president of the UGS, Mr. Theodore Veniamis, said that Greece intends to retain its leading international position in shipping, despite the volatile economic environment.
