Guangzhou Shipyard International (GSI), a subsidiary of China State Shipbuilding Corporation, started construction of a new dual-fuel pure car and truck carrier (PCTC) on Monday, May 12.

The ship will be the first in a series of PCTCs to be built by GSI for Canadian shipping company Seaspan. Design work on the ship was undertaken by Shanghai Merchant Ship Design and Research Institute in compliance with DNV and Korean Register requirements including those that cover unlimited navigation areas.

Upon completion, the PCTC will have an LOA of 230 metres, a beam of 40 metres, a depth of 15.6 metres, a design draught of 9.1 metres, a speed of 19 knots, and a capacity of 10,800 CEUs.

The dual-fuel propulsion system will be able to run on either fuel oil or LNG and will be fitted with energy-saving devices and an exhaust gas recirculation system to ensure compliance with IMO Tier III regulations.

Cargo will be carried on 14 decks, of which nine will be fixed and the remaining five will be liftable to allow transport of larger vehicles such as trailers and buses.

The PCTC will also be capable of transporting IMDG Code-compliant dangerous goods.
