STX lays keel of multipurpose deck cargo vessel

STX Turku Shipyard held a keel-laying ceremony on 4 January for the multipurpose deck cargo vessel 'NB 1379', under construction for Gaiamare.

The environmentally friendly vessel will have a length of 105.4 metres and a width of 18.8 metres, and is designed for transportation of demanding and heavy project cargoes, such as offshore wind farm structures. The ice-class 1A ship will also be suitable for transporting energy wood pellets in the Baltic Sea region. The vessel is designed to operate as an oil spill response vessel, with large tanks capable of storing approximately 2,700 cubic metres of recovered oil.

The vessel is to be delivered to the client in spring 2012 will provide work for about 300 persons.
