One person suffered burn injuries as a result of a fire and a subsequent explosion on a cargo vessel in East Kalimantan, Indonesia, on Tuesday, September 27.

The incident occurred at 09:48 local time on Tuesday as repairs were being undertaken in the engine room of the marine aggregates carrier Momentum 25001 while it was at berth in East Kalimantan's Samarinda City.

The blaze reportedly ignited without warning in an undisclosed portion of the engine room. This was then followed by the explosion of one of the onboard generators as the crew were attempting to have it started.

The blast left one of the engineers with severe burn injuries on his stomach, hands, and feet. This individual has since been brought to hospital.

No injuries have been reported among Momentum 25001's 10 other crewmembers.

A number of Good Samaritan vessels also assisted in the firefighting effort.

Local authorities are looking into the possibility that the explosion occurred as a result of the generator suffering a short circuit, which then caused sparks to come into contact with oil on the floor of the vessel's engine room.
