Deltamarin to design LNG Handysize bulk carriers

Baird Maritime

Deltamarin will design two LNG Handysize bulk carriers that will be constructed for the Finnish shipowner, ESL Shipping. The vessels will be built by Qingshan Shipyard, and will be based on Deltamarin's B.Delta26LNG design.

Expected to enter the market in 2018, the vessels will be the world's first LNG dual-fuelled Handysize bulk carriers. They are designed to operate in difficult ice conditions, and can be bunkered with gas fuel in various LNG terminals around the Baltic region.

With a shallow draught of 10 metres and an overall length of 160 metres, the vessels have a maximum capacity of 25,600DWT. The vessels have a type C LNG tank of approximately 400m3 capacity.

Emissions will be below current environmental requirements and CO2 emissions per cargo tonne transported will be reduced by over 50 per cent, compared to the present generation of vessels. The EEDI (Energy Efficiency Design Index) value will satisfy the IMO Phase 3 requirements that are due to be implemented in 2025.

The total contract value of Deltamarin's design work is about €2million (US$2.1 million).
