VESSEL REVIEW | Cymona Eagle & Cymona Falcon – Cyprus' Platres Shipping adds Ultramax bulkers to fleet

Baird Maritime

Japan’s Oshima Shipbuilding has handed over two new Ultramax bulk carriers in a series to Cyprus-based Platres Shipping Company.

Construction of Cymona Eagle and Cymona Falcon, which were ordered by Cymona Maritime, was undertaken at Oshima Shipbuilding’s Koyagi Shipyard facilities (the former Nagasaki shipyard of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries) in Nagasaki.

The newbuilds each have an LOA of 197 metres (646 feet), a beam of 32 metres (100 feet), a draught of 13.3 metres (43.6 feet), and a depth of 19.28 metres (63.25 feet), a deadweight of 64,711, a gross tonnage of 36,137, and space for 18 crewmembers.

The holds can transport ore, coal, grain, and other bulk cargo, making the ships suitable for trade along a range of routes worldwide. Cargo is loaded and unloaded with the aid of four cranes fitted on the deck of each ship.

Power for each ship is provided by a Mitsui-MAN B&W 6S50ME-C9.7-EGRBP diesel engine, which has a rated output of 7,080 kW (9,490 hp) and can deliver a service speed of 14.5 knots.

The rest of the propulsion setup includes three 520kW main generators and an 80kW emergency generator. Fuel tanks with a total capacity of 1,967 cubic metres (69,460 cubic feet) are also fitted to ensure extended operating range.

Cymona Eagle and Cymona Falcon were built to both Bureau Veritas and ClassNK rules and sail under the flag of the Marshall Islands.

Commercial management of the two ships will be the responsibility of Athens-based Alassia NewShips Management, a dry bulk shipmanagement specialist under Monaco-headquartered, family-owned shipping company the Cymona Group.
