American gold miner Newmont has taken delivery of the first in a series of two split hopper barges from a PaxOcean shipyard.

"With a length of 61.6 metres and a depth of 13 metres, Alawir II is engineered for the most demanding dredging and material transport operations," said PaxOcean.

"This vessel is built to tackle the toughest environments with precision and efficiency, ensuring controlled disposal and accurate material placement.

"The advanced split hopper mechanism makes Alawir II suitable for environmental, coastal, and mining operations, where both precision and reliability are paramount.

"Its design allows for seamless handling of various dredged materials, giving our clients the confidence to meet the highest operational standards.

The sister vessel, Amaniel II, is currently under construction and will be delivered in the first quarter of this year.

The two newbuilds are the third and fourth PaxOcean split hopper barges for Newmont.
