Imabari Shipbuilding Group announced on August 6 the delivery of SG Dawn, a new 209,000DWT liquefied natural gas (LNG)-fuelled Capesize bulk carrier. The vessel was constructed at the group's Saijo Shipyard.
The Japanese-flagged vessel has a total length of 299.9 metres, a beam of 50 metres, a deadweight tonnage of 210,125 and a gross tonnage of 110,845. It is powered by one MAN 7S60ME-C10.5-GI main engine and has a service speed of approximately 14 knots.
According to the builder, the ship's design meets the energy efficiency design index (EEDI) Phase 3 requirements ahead of schedule. The use of LNG as a fuel is stated to reduce CO2 emissions by about 20 to 30 per cent and sulphur oxide emissions by approximately 100 per cent compared to heavy fuel oil. The main engine is also equipped with a selective catalytic reduction (SCR) device to comply with Tier III regulations for nitrogen oxides.
The vessel's LNG fuel tanks are placed on the upper deck, which allows it to have the same cargo volume as a conventionally fuelled vessel. The design also allows for the use of boil-off gas from the fuel tanks to power generators and auxiliary boilers. Other efficiency features include energy-saving devices near the propeller, twisting rudders, and low-friction hull paint.
