Icon Energy projects Q3 rate rise and outlines fleet performance

Greek dry bulk shipowner Icon Energy announced that third-quarter gross hire rates across its fleet are projected to average approximately $19,000 daily per vessel, marking a 23 per cent rise from $15,500 during the prior-year period.

Fleet utilisation reached 100 per cent during the quarter to date following the completion of all vessel drydockings between December 2025 and June 2026, leaving no further scheduled maintenance downtime anticipated until the second quarter of 2029.

Across its dry bulk operations, the seaborne carrier expects to generate an estimated $11 million in minimum contracted revenue from its three vessels.

Under these charter arrangements, the Panamax vessel Alfa was converted to a fixed rate of $18,000 per day through December 2026, whilst the Kamsarmax bulker Bravo and Ultramax bulker Charlie continue on index-linked terms with charterers paying all fuel expenses.

Alongside its core bulker business, Icon holds a 4.6 per cent equity stake in a 2008-built, 2,000 TEU container feeder chartered at a fixed daily rate of $26,500 until at least June 2028.

Future maritime co-investments are projected by the firm to be pursued opportunistically as passive, non-controlling positions alongside industry partners.

Assessing broader shipping conditions, the company reported that the Baltic dry index reached its highest level since December 2023, bolstered by Brazilian iron ore shipments to China, West African bauxite exports, and Argentine corn deliveries.

Whilst geopolitical uncertainty involving the US and Iran continues to affect maritime markets, management anticipates elevated volatility to persist alongside supportive fourth-quarter seasonal demand and tightening vessel supply.
