Baltic dry bulk index gains for second day, but posts weekly loss

The Baltic Exchange's dry bulk freight index rose for a second consecutive session on Friday, supported by firmer Capesize rates, but logged an 8.1 per cent weekly decline.

The main Baltic index rose eight points, or 0.3 per cent, to 3,148 points; the index fell 8.1 per cent for the week.

The Capesize index gained 32 points, or 0.6 per cent, to 5,042 points — rising for the second consecutive session — but logged a 12.8 per cent weekly loss.

Average daily earnings for Capesize vessels rose $296 to $42,228.

The Panamax index shed seven points, or 0.3 per cent, to 2,372 points; it fell 1.5 per cent this week.

Average daily earnings for Panamax vessels declined $58 to $21,349.

Among smaller vessels, the supramax index lost five points, or 0.3 per cent, to 1,789 points but marked a weekly gain of 0.2 per cent.
