From Baird Maritime:
The Dover to Calais ferry route is certainly one of the busiest international ferry routes anywhere. Probably only Hong Kong to Macao would be busier.
The cross Channel route differs from its Asian counterpart in particular in the size of vessels utilised. Dover to Calais carries a substantial amount of vehicular cargo in addition to passengers.
European holidaymakers like to take their cars with them. The vessels are also used to take large numbers of trucks and semi-trailers.
This very detailed and well-illustrated history lists all the hundreds of steam and motor ships, catamarans and hovercraft that have served the Dover-Calais route since 1818. It shows how the services have survived wars the introduction of aircraft and, importantly, the construction and operation of the Channel Tunnel.
An impressive work of compilation and first rate presentation.
