Cruise Ship Squeeze: The New Pirates of the Seven Seas

Baird Maritime

By Ross A. Klain

From Baird Maritime:

Your reviewer has never subjected himself to a cruise on a large cruise liner. Indeed, the whole idea of it fills him with horror.

He has, however, endured the odd meal on board cruise ships. He has also closely inspected cruise ships under construction. He was reminded then of the famous comment: "No one ever went broke by under-estimating the taste of the American public".

So, my biases are obvious. The very concept of a huge, restricted, second rate floating hotel is abhorrent. As a result, I very largely agree with the author because he reinforced my prejudices so closely.

Large scale, American style cruising is one of the most exploitive industries imaginable. It exploits its customers; its employees; politicians; bureaucrats; the taxpayers who support the ports that it uses; and the shipyards that build its hideous polluting ships.

Dr Klein describes it all horribly accurately in this remarkably courageous book.
