China number one by orders

China took number one position in new order volumes for the first half of 2010, according to statistics from the Korea Shipbuilders Association (KOSHIPA) and Clarkson Research Services.

China inked new ship orders totaling 5.02 million gross tonnes, or 41 percent of the global total. Korea secured 38 percent, while Japan secured only four percent of global new order volumes.

In terms of contract values however, South Korean yards inked US$9.117 billion worth of orders, while Chinese rivals won US$8.076 billion.
