Canada's Minister of Transport, Lisa Raitt, has reintroduced in the House of Commons the Safeguarding Canada's Seas and Skies Act to overhaul the shipping industry, reports Tax-News.

Legislation under consideration by the government includes amendments to the Marine Liability Act, which will fill a gap in the current liability and compensation regime and implement a new international convention that covers incidents involving hazardous and noxious substances carried by ships.

Further, proposed amendments to the Canada Shipping Act will strengthen the current requirements for spill prevention and preparedness at oil-handling facilities. It will also seek to increase Transport Canada's oversight and enforcement capacity and enhance response to oil spill incidents.

According to Minister of Transport Lisa Raitt, Canada, "aims to achieve the right regulatory balance to unleash the maritime sector's potential to create high-value jobs while strengthening safety and environmental protection."
