BP oil spill leads to call for green energy

US President Barack Obama has called for a "new future" of clean energy following a visit to the Gulf of Mexico where BP's 'Deepwater Horizon' continues to gush oil.

Tens of thousands of barrels of oil a day have flowed into the Gulf of Mexico since a rig exploded and sank in April.

Obama said the full resources of government were being deployed, with 17,500 National Guard troops available.

BP has said the cost of cleaning up the oil spillage had risen to US$1.6 billion, while on Monday, the company's share price fell nine percent in London and New York.

BP placed a containment cap on its damaged oil well earlier this month and by last week it was collecting about 15,000 barrels of oil a day, reported the BBC.

It is estimated that approximately 40,000 barrels of oil a day were gushing out before the well was capped.
