Taiwanese shipping company the Evergreen Group has placed an order for 11 ultra large containerships (ULCS) in a series to be built by Guangzhou Shipyard International (GSI) in China and Hanwha Ocean in South Korea.
The vessels will each have dual-fuel engines and a total cargo capacity of 24,000 TEUs. The construction contracts have a total approximate value equivalent to US$3.25 billion.
GSI will build five ULCS while the six remaining vessels will be constructed by Hanwha Ocean.
These are the first ULCS to be ordered by the Evergreen Group since 2023, when the company placed an order for twenty-four 16,000TEU methanol-powered vessels to be built by South Korea's Samsung Heavy Industries and Japan's Nihon Shipyard.
Unlike the 16,000TEU ships and other ships ordered by Evergreen over the last two years, the 11,000TEU ships to be built by GSI and Hanwha Ocean will have LNG as a fuel option in place of methanol.
