South Korean container liner company HMM recently took delivery of a new methanol-powered container vessel built by HD Hyundai Samho.
HMM Green is the first in a series of nine containerships ordered by HMM from HD Hyundai Samho and HJ Shipbuilding and Construction in February 2023 as part of a fleet expansion plan.
HMM expects to take delivery of the eight remaining ships by the end of next year.
HMM Green will be operated primarily on bio-methanol, which is derived from waste resources and can generate up to 65 per cent fewer carbon emissions and 80 per cent fewer NOx and SOx emissions compared to conventional marine fuels.
The ship's initial bunkering of bio-methanol will take place at the Port of Shanghai.
The vessel's other notable features include emissions-reducing technologies to ensure compliance with EU emissions trading scheme and FuelEU Maritime regulations.
HMM Green will be initially deployed on HMM's Far East Asia, India, and Mediterranean service.
