Chinese container liner company Hainan Yangpu NewNew Shipping will deploy some of its vessels on the Northern Sea Route (NSR) in the Russian Arctic beginning in October 2026.

The route will initially be served by four 4,800TEU ice-class vessels, which will transport cargo between China and Russia via Saint Petersburg. Another 4,800TEU vessels will begin operating on the route in June next year.

NewNew Shipping has already begun operating vessels regularly on the NSR. On Wednesday, August 19, the 29,000DWT Xinxinhai 1 arrived in Murmansk with cargo consisting of automotive components following a one-month journey from Tianjin. The ship will make another stop at Saint Petersburg.

NewNew Shipping Chief Executive Ke Jin has also indicated the company's plans to invest in the ports of Murmansk and Arkhangelsk. The investments will cover upgrades to the ports' existing berths and the construction of inland logistics parks.

The company intends to transport 1.2 million tonnes through the Arctic during the 2027 summer navigation period.
