The Maine Department of Environmental Protection say they were unable to prove whether or not a cruise ship discharged grey water, but tests indicated there was waste in the water, contradicting American Cruise Lines claim that only grey water was released.

According to USA Today, witnesses say they saw a strong smelling, tannish plume coming from the ship. A test conducted hours proved that the water affected by the plume had higher levels of the bacteria "enterococcus".

Bar Harbour attracts more than 100 cruise ships each year.
