Lumibird to supply laser rangefinders for Danish frigates

Alan Bosworth

Swedish laser technology company Lumibird Photonics Sweden has been awarded a contract by Saab to supply 57 laser rangefinders to the Danish Defence Acquisition and Logistics Organisation (DALO).

The systems will be integrated into naval fire control systems on Royal Danish Navy frigates.

Designed and manufactured in Gothenburg, Sweden, the rangefinder system is based on diode-pumped erbium-glass laser technology. Deliveries are scheduled to take place between 2025 and 2026.

This new naval order follows a recent contract for Lumibird to supply the same system for Rheinmetall Air Defence’s mobile air defence platform.

The company stated the two contracts demonstrate the growing adoption of its laser rangefinder system for both land and maritime applications.

Carina Harnesk, CEO of Lumibird Photonics Sweden, said the company sees potential for future orders from other users with similar operational needs. Marc LE Flohic, CEO of the parent Lumibird Group, also expressed delight that the technology will be equipping NATO vessels.
