The Indian Ministry of Defence has entered into an agreement with Bharat Dynamics for the supply of new medium-range surface-to-air missiles (MRSAMs) for deployment aboard the Indian Navy's surface ships.
The MRSAM system is a standard fit on board multiple Indian Navy ships and is planned to be fitted on the majority of the navy's future platforms slated for acquisition. It can be deployed against fixed-wing aircraft, helicopters, unmanned aerial vehicles, and cruise missiles.
Each missile will have a length of 4.5 metres, a diameter of 2.25 metres, a weight of 275 kg, a solid rocket motor, and a range of 70 kilometres.
The MRSAMs also boast cooperative engagement capability. This allows one ship to simultaneously control the MRSAMs that it fired as well as the MRSAMs fired by another ship to more effectively intercept and destroy large numbers of airborne targets.
The contract for the new missiles has a value of approximately INR29.6 million (US$340,000).
