Russia will commission a new shipyard in the Baltic Sea to build two Mistral helicopter carriers, reports the Moscow Times.

The new Kotlin Island site, 32 kilometres from St. Petersburg, will be established under the Admiralty Shipyards umbrella.

The technology sharing deal with France's DCNS represents Russia's first significant purchase of foreign technology. Under the four-vessel deal, the initial two Mistral-class ships will be built at DCNS's facility at St. Nazaire, before the remaining two commence at the new yard.
