Swedish-built assault boats proposed for Japan Ground Self-Defence Force

Swedish defence shipbuilder Saab has proposed the supply of examples of its CB90-class fast assault boats to the Japan Ground Self-Defence Force (JGSDF), a representative of the company has confirmed.

The aluminium-hulled craft are being viewed as potential platforms from which to conduct small-scale troop landings (typically no more than 18 personnel) at beaches that the JGSDF's amphibious vessels cannot access due to size and draught restrictions.

Because the CB90 boats will also be armed, these will feature enhanced offensive and defensive firepower not available on some of the JGSDF's other vessels, which were designed primarily for amphibious operations.

The small craft also boast sensors such as radar and surveillance equipment, a range of over 500 kilometres and a top speed of 45 knots, making these ideal for conducting patrols in coastal as well as offshore waters.

A Saab representative said that the manufacture of CB90 boats under licence in Japan to satisfy local requirements may also be considered.
