Washington's King County Sheriff's Office orders hybrid patrol boat

Will Xavier

The King County Sheriff’s Office (KCSO) in Washington State has selected California-based Moose Boats for the construction of a new hybrid patrol boat.

The KSCO's Marine Division will operate the vessel, which will have a length of 46 feet (14 metres) and a hybrid diesel-electric setup consisting of two Volvo Penta D11 engines, Danfoss electric motors, Hamilton waterjets and a Corvus Energy battery pack.

The battery pack will enable the boat to operate in electric-only mode for up to two hours at a patrol speed of two knots.

The boat will also be fitted with Hamilton joystick controls to enable tighter turns using the waterjets. One of the key features of this system will be a handheld controller through which an operator can navigate from anywhere within the climate-controlled wheelhouse even when not at the helm station.

The vessel's electronics suite will feature ICOM VHF radios and a Raymarine package that will include a radar, a plotter, a depth sounder, an AIS, and a camera.
