The US Coast Guard Cutter Campbell returned to its home port in Newport on June 20 following a 62-day patrol in the Windward Passage. The deployment was part of Operation Vigilant Sentry, focused on safety of life at sea and deterring illegal migration.
While on patrol, the Campbell's crew worked with the USCG Cutters Diligence and Vigorous, and the US Navy destroyer USS Gravely. As part of maritime counter-drug operations, the combined force maintained custody of fourteen suspected smugglers who had been apprehended in the Caribbean Sea.
The crew also completed a three-day aviation inspection in Miami to evaluate proficiency in shipboard-helicopter operations. Additionally, the Campbell conducted advanced boat tactics training with Coast Guard Station Miami and the cutter Vigorous.
Cmdr. Jonathan Harris, the Campbell's commanding officer, stated that the crew worked with Department of Homeland Security and Department of Defense partners to deter irregular migration along the US southeastern maritime border. The Campbell is a 270-foot, Famous-class medium endurance cutter.
