Turkey's Ares Shipyard has introduced a new unmanned surface vehicle (USV) designed specifically for one-way attack missions.
Tufan ("Storm") was designed and built by Ares Shipyard in collaboration with defence technology company Aselsan.
The USV has a planing hull, a length of eight metres, a beam of 1.8 metres, and space for a 250kg high-explosive payload with detonating gear.
The design ensures reductions in both thermal signature and radar cross-section, thus giving the craft a reduced probability of being detected by hostile sensors.
The electronics suite meanwhile includes collision avoidance sensors, satellite communications equipment, day/night cameras, and target acquisition sensors.
A petrol engine driving a waterjet will deliver speeds of over 50 knots under Sea State four conditions and a range of 200 nautical miles.
The extended range will allow the craft to be used on strikes over great distances, thus reducing the risk of the launching vessel or operator being subjected to a retaliatory attack.
The USV can also be operated as part of swarm, allowing multiple craft to be used against the same target to increase hit probability.
