General Dynamics Electric Boat (GDEB) has been awarded a US$987 million contract modification to a previously awarded contract supporting submarine production.

This modification is for additional component development, class lead yard support, and submarine industrial base supplier development enhancements, as detailed in the US Department of Defense contract award.

"This contract modification funds important shipyard and supply chain work essential to achieving the necessary growth in output and supports our efforts to accelerate submarine delivery," said Mark Rayha, President of GDEB.

Work will be performed in Groton, Connecticut (70 per cent); Newport News, Virginia (15 per cent); and Quonset Point, Rhode Island (15 per cent) and is expected to be completed by 2031.

GDEB manufactures both the Virginia-class attack submarines and the Columbia-class ballistic missile submarines for the US Navy.

The Virginia-class boats are designed to carry out core missions including anti-submarine warfare, anti-surface warfare, delivery of special operations forces, strike warfare, irregular warfare, intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance, and mine warfare.

The Columbia-class boats will be the largest submarines ever built in the United States. Each completed Columbia-class boat will have a length of 560 feet (170 metres) and a displacement of 20,810 tons.
