Baird Maritime

US Secretary of the Navy Carlos Del Toro recently announced the names to be given to future Arleigh Burke-class destroyers of the US Navy.

DDG 145 and DDG 146 will be named USS Intrepid and USS Robert Kerrey, respectively. DDG 145 will be the fifth US Navy vessel to be named Intrepid while DDG 146 will honour Robert Kerrey, a former US Navy SEAL and Medal of Honor recipient who later became a US Senator and Governor of Nebraska.

The 513-foot (156-metre) destroyers will each be powered by four GE LM2500 gas turbines that deliver a speed of 31 knots. Armament will include a 127mm naval gun, 25mm autocannons, a 20mm close-in weapon system, torpedoes, surface-to-air missiles, and land attack cruise missiles.

The future Intrepid and Robert Kerrey will be built by Huntington Ingalls Industries' Ingalls Shipbuilding division as Flight III variants of the Arleigh Burke-class. The Flight III upgrade is centered on the AN/SPY-6(V)1 Air and Missile Defense Radar and incorporates upgrades to the electrical power and cooling capacity, as well as additional changes that enhance the ships' warfighting capabilities.
